A heat pump is an air conditioner that runs in both directions — and Sacramento's hot summers and mild winters are close to its ideal habitat. Here's how it works, minus the jargon.

A heat pump moves heat instead of making it. In summer it works exactly like an air conditioner, pumping heat from inside your home to outside. In winter it reverses: even chilly outdoor air contains heat, and the heat pump extracts it and moves it indoors. Because moving heat takes far less energy than generating it by burning gas or running electric coils, the efficiency numbers look almost implausible — several units of heat delivered per unit of electricity used.

Doesn't it stop working when it's cold out?

Not at Sacramento temperatures. Modern heat pumps heat efficiently well below freezing — and Sacramento winter nights typically sit in the 30s and 40s, which is easy territory. The cold-climate horror stories come from places with real winters; the Valley is close to a best-case scenario, which is why the Valley climate is such a strong match.

What's normal heat pump behavior that surprises new owners?

Two things. Supply air feels warm, not hot — a heat pump delivers steady, even warmth rather than the blast-furnace cycle a gas furnace produces. And brief outdoor defrost cycles on cold mornings (a little steam, a pause) are normal operation, not a fault. Continuously cold air or ice that never clears is different — that's a repair call.
